AND ALL THE MILES IN BETWEEN…

For people not in relationships, Valentine’s Day can be an opportunity to poke fun. Perhaps through an ironic Valentine’s themed party for single people or a headband that clearly reads “No Thx”, people may try to undercut the romance inherent to the holiday. Though this may have been our intention, the weekend of February 14th, 2022 was the genesis of a love that was anything but ironic or sardonic.

We met just before the lights turned on at one of South Denver’s favorite watering holes: Don’s Club Tavern. The chemistry was immediate - witty banter was followed by an exchange of phone numbers. From there, it seemed that typical courtship may occur. But not so! Almost immediately after our first date, news was received that one of us would be moving across the Ocean, and we only had 3 weeks to decide whether or not we really liked each other. In those three weeks, we spent most days together, forging the connections that prelude people falling in love with one another. We decided to keep in touch while we were apart, and determined to maintain the growing bond.

In the years that followed, the path could be called anything but typical. From moving to Finland, moving to Connecticut, moving to Breckenridge, our adventures seemed to pull us further apart, yet what the love that tied us together kept pulling us closer to one another. It wasn’t until almost three years into our relationship that we finally lived in the same city. By then, it was clear that no matter what adventures lay ahead, we were determined to embark upon them together.

So in that spirit, we return to one of our true homelands, ready to take our next steps together, bonded in marriage, celebrating with the most important people in our life who have been along for the ride.

THE BIG Q

For the two years apart while one of us lived in Connecticut, the rolling hills of Litchfield County became a crucial escape. A place where we could exist, just the two of us, and listen to the Bantam River babble along or walk to the Mt. Tom fire tower to catch either sunrise or sunset. A place we were could find ourselves reconnecting after so much time apart. A place to cook, sit by the fireplace, go swimming. A place to be together.

When we moved back to Denver, we quietly lamented that we would not be able to return to what had become our sanctuary as often - which sparked a fairly obvious idea. On a frigid afternoon, we made our way to one of our favorite outlooks, and with lots of help from friends and family, the most important question ever asked was finally asked.

“What? No! Are you sure? YES!” As the wind swept through our hair, we finally became the “us” we had often talked about. A far cry from the dark pool room of Don’s, now standing in a field in Washington Depot watching the sunset, tears filling our eyes from happiness (and possibly also the cold), all those years so physically far apart had culminated In a perfect moment of togetherness. A moment etched in our memories: the first page of the next and best chapter yet.

For all the times we flew to each other. Worth it.
